The American Kennel Club awards a certificate through its AKC Canine Good Citizen® program to dogs and their pet parents who pass the CGC test with an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator, recognizing their training in becoming good neighbors, friends, and members of society.
You are not required to complete an CGC program, but it is highly recommended to book a trial session before taking the test.
The CGC program is open to all dogs, including mixed breeds, and there are no age restrictions. However, if you want the CGC to be an official AKC title, then registration with the AKC is required, either through an AKC registration number, PAL (Purebred Alternative Listing), or Canine Partners number for mixed breeds.
AKC fees ( in addition to evaluator's fee):
Evaluator will be distributing a new CGC Test/Registration Form (that you receive when your dog passes the CGC test) which includes the option to select one of these two choices:
1. CGC as a Title. The processing fee is $32. You will receive the CGC certificate, you may use the suffix “CGC” after the dog’s name, and CGC will be added to the dog’s title record. The dog must be registered or listed with AKC (an AKC number, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners)
2. CGC certificate only. The processing fee is $25. CGC will not be added to the dog’s title record.
